St Maximillian Kolbe (Little Drops of Water)
St Maximillian Kolbe is often called the Knight of the Immaculata due to his profound love of Our Lady under the title of the Immaculate Conception. He was born in Poland in 1894 and was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1918. In 1927 he founded what was the largest Franciscan community in the world called the 'City of the Immaculata', and which was dedicated to bringing the world to the Heart of Jesus through consecration to Mary. He was martyred by the Nazi regime in 1941 in Auschwitz when he offered to take the place of a fellow inmate condemned to death in reprisal for an escaped prisoner. In 1982, Pope St John Paul II canonised him as a 'martyr of charity'. His feast day is August 14 and he is the patron saint of media communications, the family, and the drug addicted.
