Finding Jesus in the Temple 1000 Piece Puzzle
William Holman Hunt's The Finding of Jesus in the Temple contrasts the light of Christ with the darkness of ritual without faith. The breathtaking intricacy of the temple interior is a feast for the eyes, with each golden column decorated differently; fine wooden tracery screens the space, and the ceiling forms a pattern of jewel-like glass. To the left, the crowd of scribes and Pharisees sit am dim opulence. An old blind priest clutches the scrolls of the Torah, perhaps indicating those who could not see that the Messiah was among them. In the background, people file into the temple bearing gifts, but the elders remain huddled in their luxurious surroundings, a sharp contrast to the disheveled beggar sitting outside.
The Presentation 1000 Piece Puzzle
Art historians know little of this Northern European painter, but he uses dazzling color to mesmerizing effect in his Presentation at the Temple. Mary's mantle glows in lapis lazuli blue, the rarest of hues imported from Afghanistan. The blue of St Joseph's robe is more muted, while Simeon's tunic seems tinged with brown. But for all the delight for the eyes, this moment of joy is but a prelude to extended suffering. Jesus, sitting up in the arms of his mother, is situated on a direct diagonal with the infant being stabbed by one of Herod's soldiers. St Joseph, seemingly relegated to the outskirts of the scene, was intentionally placed below the brutal attack, a reminder that he will soon have to flee with his family from the murderous rage of Herod.
The Nativity 1000 Piece Puzzle
Instead of displaying the Christ child in a manger and enfolded in swaddling clothes, in his Adoration of the Shepherds, Ghirlandaio lies Christ on a fold of Mary's robe against the ground, while all the other figures kneel in adoration around Him. Joseph turns away to look towards the dazzling parade of the approaching Magi. The pageant wends its way through an expertly rendered distance in a cheerful array of pinks, yellows, and reds flecked with gold leaf - precious highlights noticeably lacking in the foreground figures. Ghirlandaio himself occupies an unusually prominent position as the kneeling shepherd in the foreground pointing to the Child with his hand on his heart, demonstrating not only his authorship of the work, but his devotion to the subject.
The Visitation 1000 Piece Puzzle
The two expectant mothers of Raphael's Visitation dominate the pictorial space, showcasing the special graces that have been conferred upon Mary and Elizabeth. Raphael, the most sought-after painter in the world at the time, had just mastered painting in oils when he produced this work, and the innovative technique allowed for softer effects and more natural looking detail. The compositional device of joined hands was a recent innovation, departing from earlier images where Elizabeth either knelt before Mary or embraced her. The background propels the viewer to the Baptism of Christ, when the cousins John and Jesus meet again. John pours water over Christ while above, the skies open to reveal God the Father, borne by angels in a burst of golden rays.
